The challenge: three supplier markets that have to agree with each other
A battery-storage project at 4.5 MW is not one procurement. It is at least three: panels, inverters and storage, each with its own manufacturer landscape, lead times and failure modes, and each capable of invalidating choices made in the others.
Evaluated separately, the three produce a specification that is individually sensible and collectively incoherent. The incoherence is discovered at integration.
The approach: evaluate across the classes, not within them
ASE ran the commercial scoping and coordinated supply, with supplier evaluation spanning panel, inverter and storage manufacturers together rather than in sequence, across Risen, Huawei and RESACS. The question asked of each candidate was not whether it was good in its category but what it forced on the other two.
This sits inside the firm’s wider solar supply-chain work, which is where the manufacturer knowledge comes from. Evaluating an inverter manufacturer is considerably easier when the same practice has already qualified suppliers across the class for other mandates.
Three questions decided most of it. What does the storage chemistry require of the inverter, what does the inverter require of the array, and what does the German grid connection require of all three. Answered in that order, the specification narrows quickly. Answered in the order the quotations arrive, it does not narrow at all.
The results: a scoped project with the supply decisions evidenced
The project was scoped at 4.5 MW with supplier evaluation covering all three classes and the supply coordination behind it. What the client holds is not a recommendation but the evaluation that produced it, which is the part that survives a change in lead times or pricing.
